September 28, 2009: 2009 USATF Long Distance Race (LDR) Circuit Top Finishers Determined, http://utah.usatf.org/assoc/ut/ldr.htm

The USATF Long Distance Race Circuit is a series of races in Utah that have joined together to create a system to award points to runners who sign up for USA Track & Field. They get a certain number of points based off of how they place in the race and how far it was, as well as how many races they have ran in the circuit for that particular distance. They award longer races with more points, but they also don’t want people to over-do it, so they limit the amount of points you can get from marathons and half-marathons so that shorter-distance runners who specialize in 5Ks or 10Ks can have a fair shot at placing well too.
Some of the major races that were part of the circuit this year included the Salt Lake Marathon, Half, & 5K, the Ogden Marathon & Half, Deseret News Marathon & 10K, and the Top of Utah Marathon & Half, and most of the others are 5Ks. You can run all 12 races if you want the maximum amount of points possible, and if you place high, you have a great shot at a top 5 placement, and you will get a cash prize at the end of the series.
The cash prizes are: 1st: $1000, 2nd: $750, 3rd: $500, 4th: $250, 5th: $100. There are also masters prizes of $300, $200, & $100.
You must complete at least 4 races to be eligible. This year there were 16 females and 30 males.
There is also prize money at each race usually as required by USATF for the top 3 males and females and masters. At the end-of-year banquet in December when the awards are given, random prizes and age division awards are also given.
You can see more about the circuit at: http://utah.usatf.org/assoc/ut/ldr.htm
Stefanie used to run for Weber (see more about Stefanie in other article below). Mary Ann runs on the Utah Running Club team (see www.utahrunningclub.com). His best marathon time is 2:16. Aleksander runs for Salt Lake Running Co and is married to Olympic marathoner Zuzana Tomas. He is from Yugoslavia. He was a state champion in Nevada in High School then he ran for the U of U. Seth also runs for Salt Lake Running Co and also ran for the U of U before the mens’ program was terminated. He placed 28th in the US Marathon Championships. You can get tips from Seth at http://saltlakerunning.blogspot.com/2009/09/marathon-tips-by-seth-wold.html.

September 19, 2009: Nan Kennard, former BYU All-American Steeplechaser, breaks Top of Utah Marathon course record by 3 minutes, runs under Olympic Trials B-Standard Marathon Qualifying time by 3 minutes. See it on You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYb_zjikVUA

Nan cruises along with excellent form on her way to the best female marathon performance in Utah this year.
Nan Kennard, formerly Nan Evans, won her 2nd marathon today, the 2nd one she has ever ran. She won the 2007 Ogden Marathon in 2:58, her debut marathon, and today achieved a 14 minute personal best. The qualifying time does not count because the qualifying period begins in 2010 (with the exception of one marathon) and the course has too much of a net downhill to count, but since it was ran at altitude, it shows that Nan is capable of running a similar time on a flat, sea-level course. She is plan ning on qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Trials. Nan took th e lead early, running with a pack of men and kept the lead the entire race. Nan is the wife of Aaron Kennard and the mother of 3 children. She currently lives in Westminster, CO. You can follow Nan’s running at nan.fastrunningblog.com.

Julie Esplin, former BYU runner, had an impressive come-from-behind 2nd place finish. She had decided before the race to keep her pace an even 7 minutes per mile, so she let the front pack of women go ahead and as they slowed down, she gradually passed many runners until she ended up in 2nd place. By about mid-way through the race she worked her way up to the 5th place position and continued to catch the next 3 women over the 2nd half. She placed the same place last year, but this year her time was much faster and the field was much more competitive. Julie currently resides in Orem.
Allie Scott also used patience to help her claim a top place. At about mile 4 she worked her way up to about
5th place, and then by about mile 10 she worked her way up to 3rd place. Allie is the 2008 winner of the Top of Utah Marathon, as well as the 2009 Deseret News Marathon winner. She is a student at Utah State University residing in Logan.
This year’s marathon proved to be one of the most deep and competitive marathons for both men and women, possibly due to the increase in prize money. Prize money was given to the top 5 this year, whereas last year it was for the top 3 and the prize money for the top 3 is about 50% more than last year. It was also the largest marathon in Utah again this year, with 309 more runners than last year. 174 more women ran (1009) and 135 more men ran (1018) totaling 2027 runners.
Paul Peterson won the men’s race in his hometown. He is a former Olympic Trials marathon qualifier. He is the creator of Marathon GIS, an online race mapping program.
Josphat Chemjor is residing temporarily in the US to race and coach in Colorado. He is from Africa. His personal best in the marathon is 2:13. He placed 2nd.
Nicholas McCombs is a former BYU runner living in Orem. He won $1250 in the 2009 Deseret News Marathon with his 2nd place finish and $550 in the 2009 Ogden Marathon with another 2nd place finish and in the 2008 Top of Utah Marathon he took 2nd place with a time only 4 seconds faster than this year’s.
Women (1009): 1st: $1500 + $500 course record = $2000, Nan Kennard, 2:44:10, Westminster, CO

3rd: $750, Allie Scott, 3:04:37, Logan, UT
4th: $500, Genevieve Keogh, 3:05:45, Layton, UT
Men (1018): 1st: $1500, Paul Peterson, 2:23:07, Logan, UT
2nd: $1000, Josphat Chemjor, 2:25:08, Aurora, CO for now, from Africa

Paul Peterson (pictured in the blue and white singlet) looks quite comfortable at this point in the race and would be smiling again after his victory at TOU.
3rd: $750, Sammy Nyamongo, 2:28:12, Atlanta, GA

.
August 22, 2009: Lindsey Dunkley and Kassi Anderson go deep under Olympic Trials Marathon qualifying standard at Hobble Creek Half Marathon.
Lindsey’s 1:12:13 placed her ahead of the 3rd place prize money male, a former BYU distance runner. Her time is a respectable time even for men. This is the fastest Half Marathon ran by a woman in Utah this year, and perhaps in many years. She runs for Mormontimes.com. Kassi’s 1:13:58 was also one of the fastest times ran in many years in Utah. Although the course will not count because it is too much downhill, the fact that it was at altitude and that both of them ran well under the automatic qualifying standard of 1:15:00, shows that these women are likely to be able to hit the standard at a sea level net flat course.
Lindsey said she has no plans for running in the Olympic Trials and was unaware of the standard. Incredibly, this was her debut Half Marathon, and the first time she has ran over 10 miles. You can see more about her race at lindseyd.fastrunningblog.com.
Kassi has recently returned from Michigan where she was training with an Olympic training group and will resume her training with BYU, where she ran in college when she broke the NCAA steeple chase record. Last year she ran in the Olympic Trials and she is sponsored by Nike.
