ADVERTISING FOR RACE DIRECTORS (SEE BELOW):

Save on the COST and TIME of printing flyers and passing them out!  Use online advertising instead!

Hello,

My name is Mary Ann.  I am an avid road racer, the Steeple Chase Record Holder at Southern Utah University and the 2009 winner of the Utah Valley Marathon.  To share my passion for running with others, I created a race advertising website, www.UtahRunningGuide.com, that gets thousands of unique visitors each month, with the number of viewers rapidly increasing according to web analytics!

I would love to promote your event!

Here is what I can do to get the word out about your race:

Option #1: BASIC LISTING ($10 or free if meets certain criteria):

Get your race listed or updated on the web page of the month in which your race occurs with complete and current information (excluding a logo) for only $10 or FREE if the race has a cash prize of at least $100 or $200 of non-cash prizes including gift cards and nearly anything that can be purchased or resold (not trophies, medals, etc.) for the top females in your race and will specify what it is (some races have only prizes for the overall finisher, male OR female, which is not fair to females).  Races outside of Utah cost $20.

Option #2: PREMIUM LISTING ($100 minus discounts for certain criteria):

Your logo and additional information will be listed about your race on the web page of the month in which your race occurs, with your listing in dark bold, and a direct link to your race with another logo on the main race page, www.UtahRunningGuide.com/Races, and send an invitation to over 500 members of our facebook group “Utah Running Guide .com” (www.facebook.com/groups/UtahRunningGuide) that includes details about your race and a logo (see below for more details about the benefits of this method of advertising) for only $100, or double the amount of race entries (major discounts and additional fees for out of state races listed below)!  Our facebook group called “Utah Running Guide .com” is used to send invitations to for races, where your race will stay on facebook until the event happens.  Runners can RSVP to the event as “Attending” or “Maybe Attending” or “Not Attending”.  To see examples of past events the group has been invited to, see www.facebook.com/groups/UtahRunningGuide/Events.  Advertising lasts for 6 months or until the date of your race, which ever one comes later.  For the most cost-effective option, get started advertising a year before your race since it is the same price as 6 months before or 1 month before and 5 months after, for examples.

Get discounts for the following criteria:

  • $25 off if it is not on Sunday
  • $5 off if the proceeds will benefit a charity
  • $5 off if your race is part of the USATF LDR (Long Distance Race) Circuit
  • $15 off if it is a good marathon training distance, “long run” (over 10K, up to 20 miles)
  • $10 off if it is a 10K (rewarding the longer distance for marathon training)
  • $5 off if less than a 10K distance (some incentive to reward races that aren’t marathons since we can only do so many marathons in a year)
  • $10 off for every $100 worth of “valuable” prizes you give to the top over-all females (and/or age division/masters winners) ($1 off for every $10 of prizes for females).
  • $100 off (FREE premium advertising except for the facebook invitation) if you give out $1000 of prizes for females.  Your race is also listed on the homepage for FREE with a link to the page of the month your race is in.
  • If you have remaining credit and you give us 1 free entry to use at our discretion, you get the facebook invitation sent out for FREE, as well as your logo of your race and a direct link to your race on the home page.

Additional fees:

  • $50 more if out of Utah
  • $50 more if not a strictly running event (triathlons, snow shoe races, etc.)

HOW TO GET STARTED:

1. Email Mary Ann Schauerhamer at RunnersRaceGuide@gmail.com (most efficient way so I can keep a record of your race info for future reference) or call 415-583-0068, to confirm your rate of advertising.

2. The fastest way to get your advertising started is to make a payment on www.paypal.com to the account of RunnersRaceGuide @ Gmail .com (you will need to create a paypal account if you don’t already have one, which takes only a few minutes.  To do this, go to the website and click on “sign up” and follow the instructions.  This payment method is safe, easy and fast to use, but requires a small fee with each transaction).  You can also write a check or money order out to “Mary Ann Schauerhamer,” and mail it to 225 26th Ave Apt B, San Francisco, CA 94121.

3. Send an email to UtahRunningGuide [at] gmail [dot] com with the following information about your race: (the information that will appear on the monthly race calendar page.  Click on www.UtahRunningGuide.com/Races, then click on the month of your choice to see how the information will be listed.)

  • Month, Day, Year, & Day of the week of your race
  • Official name of your race, distance of each event, & time each event starts.  If any events are walking only, please specify.
  • City, State, Address of race
  • Websites where they can find more information including online registration sites, blogs, facebook groups, etc.  If you don’t have one, I would highly recommend putting the information somewhere online!  This site is a good first step, but if you need more suggestions for free places to put your information, let me know and I’ll give you some suggestions.)
  • Cost of race, when the deadlines are for each price, registration options (in person at a business, online, by email, etc.) when online registration closes, if race day registration is possible or not & if so what time it closes & how much it costs.  Any free entries for elite runners, discounts for groups, or others who meet certain criteria, etc. if applicable.  If there is a deadline to get a t-shirt, medal, or other benefit, list it here (such as first 200 to register, etc.)  Also, list when registration will open for the event and if your race has a cap for registration numbers, when you predict the race will be filled by or when it was filled to capacity the previous year.
  • Race Directors, phone numbers, email addresses (and the group or company who is putting the race on if applicable)
  • Prizes for the top finishers overall and/or age group winners, male & female.  Please be as specific as you can if you know what these are, including the cash value of items given out if possible/applicable.  Include any ribbons, medals, trophies, etc.  If you haven’t decided yet, please let me know asap.  Having these listed will increase participation in your race!  Also, ideally, but optionally, if you can list what the top runners of last year’s event won and what their names are and their times that will make other runners want to run your race so their name will be listed next year on the site!
  • Additional info: Prizes given out in drawings and goodies, refreshments, and swag given out to all runners (please give a very specific list of all of these things if possible.  The more details you give, the more people will see that you are investing a lot into the runners and that you are very organized and will be more inclined to choose your race!  Even little things are perks for runners!)  Include any t-shirts, medals, ribbons, given to everyone or the first ones to register, etc.  Include any pertinent details about your race including what the money is being raised for if it is for charity or a fund-raiser.  If you want to list how many participants you had the previous year, that may increase participation since some runners like to run races due to the sheer volume of the turnout expected.  Also, if possible (but optional) please let us know if your race is USATF certified (measured by them to verify it is at least the distance you advertise), and details about your course including the starting elevation, finishing elevation, changes in elevation (how many feet they run down hill or uphill during the race), what point in the race they hit hills, what kind of terrain they will run on (asphalt, concrete, dirt, road, pedestrian trails, snow, mud, etc.)  You can also list any other perks about your race, including massage, music, blow-up toys, entertainment, additional activities, games, climbing walls, attractions, expos, etc. associated with your race.  If women get a head start, or there are any unique rules or requirements for participation, such as needing to run with a dog or snow shoes, etc. please list it here.
  • Distance your race is from Provo, UT and total cash value of all prizes given to top female finishers (this info will be barely visible and is for purposes of giving you discounts only).  Also include a logo if you are opting for the premium listing.

BENEFITS OF SENDING OUT INVITATIONS TO THE FACEBOOK GROUP:

Our facebook group called “Utah Running Guide .com” is used to send invitations to for races, where your race will stay on the facebook page until the event happens under the list of upcoming events.  It will also stay on the wall past the event.  The nice thing about these invites is that if people join the group after the event has been created, or are just looking at the list of events, they can still see them at any time.  Also, when people RSVP to the event, as “Attending” or “Maybe Attending” or “Not Attending”, you can see how many people have responded to the invitation.  It also shows how many people have not responded to the invitation, so you can see the names of those who have been invited but haven’t replied yet.  However, this isn’t an accurate indicator of how much the advertising has influenced them to participate in the event, since many people tell me that they read the invites, but most don’t rsvp.  I try to remind the group periodically to rsvp though so that race directors get more assurance that people are reading the invites.

As far as demographics, people usually don’t stay in the group very long unless they will benefit from the things I advertise because of the volume of messages and invites they receive, which are usually Utah events and events close to Utah.  Most of them are probably central Utah residents, since that is what I advertise the most, but I have had people from Nevada, Mesquite, Arizona, Idaho and Colorado reply when offering free race entries and other things, so I know they are also reading the messages and part of the group.  They travel from out of state to participate in some of the events, surprisingly!

The group size hovers around 500 people lately.  Some people join the group but aren’t that serious about finding out about races, and once they get the frequent invites they will leave.  So I know that those in the group want the invites and are looking for races, so it is a quality place to advertise.  Also, you can see the actual names and pictures of the people being invited, so you can trust that I actually am inviting as many people as I say.  You can join the group yourself and when you get the invites, you will know for certain that the invites are sent out.  This is more assuring for race directors because other people offer to send out invites to thousands of runners, but there is no way to follow up on that since they use blind carbon copies, and will not share their email list with you so that you can see for yourself how many emails are sent out.

TRADES FOR FREE ENTRIES INSTEAD OF PAYING TO ADVERTISE IS ONLY AN OPTION FOR RACES WITH “VALUABLE” PRIZES FOR TOP RUNNERS: You also have the option of giving us 1 free race entry in place of part of your payment, for Utah Running Guide to use at its discretion (to be used by any person they want or sold) if your prizes meet certain criteria.   These race entries must be full and complete, regular entries with all the benefits that other runners get who pay to run the race, including t-shirts, eligibility for overall prizes, drawings, etc. (Race entry trades are only possible for races that guarantee prizes that have a minimum required cash value for top runners (at least $1 per gender for every mile away from Provo the race is, ie. $100 of prizes per gender for a race 100 miles from Provo) and that are strictly running events (no triathlons, snow-shoes, etc.)  All other races must pay by check/cash/paypal only.   You must know for sure what the minimum prizes are that you will give out before we can start advertising for you and you if you change your prizes after we begin advertising, you must let Mary Ann know as soon as possible.  If your prizes end up being worth less according to our prize-ratings, and you received a discount, you will be required to offer us additional free entries or payment if applicable.  If you did a trade for free entries, and no longer are giving enough prizes to be eligible for a trade, you must make a payment for the remaining time we advertise for you in addition to the free entries you already offered.

HOW MUCH PRIZES COUNT FOR DISCOUNTS:

  • Cash: everyone can use cash, so it counts 100%

  • Hotel stays count for half of their retail price
  • Things that can be easily resold count for half of their retail price (such as diamonds, ladders, treadmills, ipads, St. George marathon entries, etc.)
